Jacob Anderskov x Århus Sinfonietta

“The familiar grains of sand in the songs can form new universes.” These words accompanied five hearts in Politiken when Jacob Anderskov released a series of selected folk school songs with new jazz avant-garde colors in 2024. The songs have now gained further color play with new events for Aarhus Sinfonietta, expanded for the occasion with improvising musicians under the title ‘I Sang´.

‘I Sang´ transforms the familiar song universe of the folk school songbook into a musical experience that both surprises and resonates. In addition to listening and feeling, the audience is invited to sing along to songs like ‘Du danske sommer’, ‘Se det summer af sol’, and ‘Danmark nu blunder den lyse nat’. Communal singing arises several times during a cohesive concert sequence, which remains a concert. What happens, happens in the improvisational community and under the expert guidance of the concert’s seasoned musicians.

‘I Sang´ is performed by Jacob Anderskov on piano and his own ensemble, as well as musicians from Aarhus Sinfonietta. The project premiered at the Aarhus Jazz Festival 2024 with nine performers on stage. In 2025, it will be performed again at several Danish venues, this time with even more musicians.

About Jacob Anderskov
Jacob Anderskov grew up in Nørre Nissum and was musically nurtured on a mix of the Folk High School Songbook, jazz, classical, and folk music from many countries. Since then, he has earned a conservatory education, a professorship in music, and an international career with a shower of awards for his many innovative jazz releases. The Folk High School Songbook tradition has always been with him, and only a few kilometers from his childhood home lived Thøger Larsen – the poet behind some of our greatest national classics. The landscapes of childhood, tradition, weather, and summer nights are among the starting points for the idea that Jacob Anderskov brings to life with ‘Through song´.

About Aarhus Sinfonietta
Aarhus Sinfonietta is a modern classical ensemble consisting of 19 musicians. With a mission to convey experimental Danish and international music, the sinfonietta commissions and performs new works within contemporary music every year, with a strong focus on co-creation and collaborations with other actors.

The motto is that contemporary music should be created in community and with a broad collaborative perspective in mind, so we do not close ourselves off from the familiar.

Aarhus Sinfonietta was founded in 1990 by a group of musicians from the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and The Jutland Ensemble in collaboration with composer Hans Abrahamsen. It has since had several prominent artistic leaders, including Allan Gravgaard Madsen and Jakob Kullberg.
