9 December 2020. Glory to the Vanquished! A French Monument in Denmark – postponed to 3 February 2021
There are seven full-sized copies of Antonin Mercié’s 1875 bronze sculptural group Gloria Victis (Glory to the Vanquished) in the world, and only one outside of France. This talk recalls the fascinating story behind the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek’s Gloria Victis, which today stands in the Winter Garden, and Carl Jacobsen’s twenty-five year struggle to obtain it.

Nicholas Parkinson, PhD, is a Novo Nordisk Mads Øvlisen Postdoctoral Fellow at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. His research examines artistic exchanges between France and Denmark in the late nineteenth century, with a focus on the power of politics and institutions on shaping art historical knowledge.

The talk is in English.

The ticket includes admission to the museum, and a cup of coffee and a croissant. If there are several of you who want to have coffee together, please buy your tickets together and under one name.
