A chance to hear the superb Henrik Brendstrup and Marianna Shirinyan play cello sonatas by Beethoven. The concert provides a glimpse of three different creative periods in the composer’s life. The Seven Variations on a Theme from Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute comes from an early period, when Beethoven was writing in an elegant, Viennese style, heavily influenced by Haydn and Mozart. The Sonata in A major dates from the composer’s middle, more romantic, lyrical period; while the Sonata in D major, particularly its fugue, represents the late, complex, almost abstract Beethoven.
