Cello Sonatas from 1915

/ 18. September 2022
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Duo Brantelid-Hadland is a union of two of the most sought-after musicians in Scandinavia: the Norwegian piano virtuoso, Christian Ihle Hadland and the Danish world-famous cellist, Andreas Brantelid.

For today’s concert they have put together a programme of sonatas composed in 1915 amidst the horrors of World War I. Debussy transports us to a dark, fleeting dream that mixes modernist originality with French nostalgia. With its late Romantic musical language, the little-performed sonata by the Danish composer Peder Gram expresses an inexhaustible longing. The duo end with Frank Bridge, grieving for his native England in this heartfelt, plaintive sonata.

Claude Debussy (1862-1918). Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor (1915)

Peder Gram (1881-1956). Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 14 (1915)
Andante misterioso e narrante
Allegro inquieto

Frank Bridge (1879-1941). Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor (1915)
Allegro ben moderato
Adagio ma non troppo

Andreas Brantelid – cello
Christian Ihle Hadland – piano
