Copies Of Etruscan Tomb Paintings

Copies Of Etruscan Tomb Paintings

Carl Jacobsen was very interested in the painted Etruscan tombs which he visited several times. The richness of detail in the paintings showing scenes of life and death in ancient Etruria, and the fact that they are valuable examples of ancient wall-painint gmade Carl Jacobsen decide to have the pictures copied for his Glyptotek.

Even then many of the tombs were in a poor state of preservation and several are now completely destroyed. The old copies are still of great importance because the render the paintings in a better condition than the present. The task of copying lasted from 1895 to 1913 and resulted in 90 facsimilies in 1:1 painted on canvas and a series of small water-colour fair copies which show the entire tombs comprising walls, ceiling, and plan. All are reproduced in colour in the book.
