This type of earrings is called crotalia (from the Greek word for rattle or castanets) because the pearl pendants made a clinking sound when used. Earrings of this type were extremely popular among Roman ladies. Very common type of jewelry documented in Fayum mummy portraits and described by Pliny (Natural History IX 14)
