European Sculpture

European Sculpture

The representation of the body and soul of the human being was a crucial element in the concept of art embraced by Carl Jacobsen, founder of the Glyptotek. The works in this volume of the catalogue series cover a broad spectrum but they all share a common feature: a narrative content. The volume includes works of European sculpture through three hundred years, from Johan Tobias Sergel up to Max Klinger. The acquisition of these works took place in the period from 1880 to 1910, and by far the majority of them were bought by Jacobsen himself. The collection numbers just over eighty pieces, here chronologically arranged. Experiencing them in sequence makes it possible to trace the development of European sculpture from Neo-Classicism to Early Modernism.
