French Painting in the 19th Century

French Painting in the 19th Century

Around 1880 Carl Jacobsen started buying contemporaneous French art. This was done on the spot, in the teeming Parisian art-life, and thus a cornerstone of the Glyptotek’s modern collection was laid down. These first purchases have later been supplied, i.e. through Helge Jacobsen’s 1923 acquisition of substantial parts of the Ordrupgaard collection. This volume of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek catalogues comprises the diverse field of 19th century painting. Specimens of the most important and popular artistic trends of the era are represented here, including works by Salon painters held in high esteem by Carl Jacobsen. Names like David, Corot, Delacroix, Courbet, Millet and Rousseau mark out the span of a collection complementing the main area of the modern department, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
