Greece in the Classical Period

Greece in the Classical Period

Classical Greek art as manifested in Athens in the 5th and 4th centuries B.C. has been coveted as an example of excellence for later European art.

The collection of Classical Greek originals in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek primarily contains marble sculpture which originally adorned temples and sanctuaries as well as more modest grave-makers commemorating Athenian citizens. The painted pottery is also represented: a series of oil-containers in white-ground technique used in the cult of the dead; a black-figured amphora which once was part of the prize for an athletic contest, and red-figured vases which formed the wine-service for the symposium. A bronze mirror and modest terracotta figurines complete the picture of Classical Greece.
