The collection of ancient Greek portraits in the Glyptotek illustrates many aspects of Greek sculpture as well as Greek history – politically and spiritually. The collection comprises fantasy portraits as the Classical poet Anacreon, early individualized likenesses such as Alchibiades and Socrates. The self portrait of Pheidias, the 5th century B.C. master sculptor, rulers such as Philip II, Alexander the Great, Ptolemy I, and Pyrrhus. The famous philosophers Epicurus and Aristotle, the tragedians Euripides and Sophocles, the full figure statue of orator Demosthenes, and the posthumous portrait of Homer.
