When Rodin’s friend and biographer Judith Cladel was tasked with taking inventory of his considerable archive of 7000 drawings upon his death, she discovered a very special series of works, carefully conserved and hidden by the artist in a box he labeled “secret museum”. These 121 drawings and watercolors, long hidden in the archives of his Meudon estate, constitute the most intense and erotic corpus of Rodin’t drawing work and explore such subjects as autoeroticism and lesbian sexuality.
This previously unpublished body of work – whose provocative and subtly transgressive nature underscores the foundations of twentieth century modernism – is presented whole for the very first time in this book.
