French Sculpture II
“History is repeating itself, and in our era the Medicis are to be found in Copenhagen.” These flattering words were written around 1907 by Auguste Rodin to one of his important patrons, Carl Jacobsen, only thirty years after the Danish brewer had started to establish what would, in time, become the largest collection of French 19th century sculpture in Northern Europe. The close cooperation between the brewer and the sculptor resulted in one of the world’s great collections of Rodin’s works.
Carl Jacobsen had a particular love for French Salon art, and thus the Glyptotek comprises works by the most important sculptors of the day, a.o. Chapu, Barrias, Dalou, Delaplanche and Gautherin.
