This volume is the first of two on French sculpture in the Glyptotek’s collection. The works cover a period from the years of the Revolution to the 3rd Republic. Major artists of the time are Barye, Carpeaux and Dubios.
Carl Jacobsen considered sculpture as a perfect medium for popular art education. Through his purchases he therefore sought to give an apprehensive picture of French sculpture in the 19th century.
