Icons have a long, rich tradition, the latter part of which, a period much influenced by folk-art, is beautifully represented in the Glyptotek’s icon collection. This covers principally Greek and Russian icons from 1800 on-wards. Among the principal motifs are the childhood and passion of Jesus, the Mother of God, as well as many of the best-known saints, e.g. Saint Nicholas and Saint George. The catalogue also covers such objects as Rumanian glass icons, travelling icons and icons which have served to ornament the interiors of churches.
